FAQ

Why is my Event not showing up in search results and under Categories, Cities and/or Tags?

There are several scenarios why a particular Event is not showing up in search results on What up in town.

1. You haven't published the Event

If the Event is visible on your Dashboard under Drafts it has not been published yet. In order to publish it go to the Event page and click publish.

2. The Event is private

If you have selected private under visibility settings when you created the Event it is by design only visible via its unique link.

3. The Event has not been reviewed yet

To keep up the quality for our users we review Events and apply strict quality measures. If you are not a trusted host yet (no listed badge stars next to your profile) and you just published the Event don't worry, it will probably show up within the next few days (unless, see 4.).

4. Your Event doesn't fulfil our quality requirements

If you have published your Event more than 3 days ago (in some cases it can take event longer than that) and it still isn't visible in our lists and search results that is probably because the Event didn't pass our review procedure. This can be the case if the resolution or quality of the used cover image is bad, if the event was labeled irrelevant for our audience or if the Event content contains spammy links or text. Please contact our support to find out what needs to be changed to get your Event listed.

How can I get my Event listed in a Collection?

As of now all our collections are actively curated by us. We usually add Events into suitable collections, however, if you think your Event is a good match for a specific collection and we have not added it, just send an email to our support and we will consider your request.

In the future it will be possible for users to create and curate their own collections, stay tuned for that!

Why are there no Events in my Discover Feed?

Your Discover Feed is generated by our match algorithm, which is based on your location and interests, profiles and collections you follow. If you haven't yet, add your location and follow some interests to populate your stream. If it stays empty it means that we currently don't have any Events listed for you (we try to only show you Events that match your taste).

But don't move to another city just yet, our database is growing rapidly and over time there will be more and more Events in our lists.

How much does a website for my event cost?

Nothing!

On What up in town you can create websites for your events completely free.

How can I offer my event services on What up in town?

Have a look at the 'Information for vendors' page and sign up with the form there. We will review your service and get back to you asap. You can also reach out to us via phone, email or live chat if you have any further questions.

What kind of event services can I offer?

There are no restrictions in terms of type. However, we require very high quality and reliability. We review every service manually in great detail and select the ones that bring significant value to a certain number of hosts.

What is structured data?

Structured data is a standardized format for providing information about a page and classifying the page content via meta data (meaning not visible for the user). Google for instance allows website creators to mark the content of a website as event, which greatly enhances the appearance for the page in Google search.

What is HYPE?

HYPE is a metric developed by What up in town to measure and visualize how popular an event is over time. Currently the value is based on an exponential moving average (EMA) influenced by some other factors. In the future the HYPE factor will also incorporate indicators like "number of shares on social media", "trending topics", etc.

What is SEO and why is it important for my event page?

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) refers to the practice of altering content and meta data of a website in order to achieve a better search rank on Google, Bing, etc.

The reason for doing so is almost exclusively to increase organic traffic to a website. It is important for your event if you want to reach a large audience. While you can also pay for exposure through ads organic traffic is free and not everyone can be animated to click on an ad.

All event pages on What up in town are automatically optimized for search engines, including AMP support and structured data.

What is AMP?

Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) is an online publishing format developed by Google to drastically improve page load speed on mobile devices.

Why is it important?

Well, simply because users will likely leave a website if it takes forever to load. And even if they do not leave right away, the user experience will suffer substantially. Therefore, What up in town automatically integrates the AMP format into all event pages so that they load almost instantly and provide a smooth experience. AMP pages are also eligible for smart cards at the top of Google mobile searches.
