Learn to knit with fine wire and Swarovski crystal beads. The workshop will provide you with the opportunity to learn the basics in wire knitting, introducing the materials and tools used, and an understanding of how designs can be created.]
You will be given all the materials to make a knitted wire brooch in a thistle design, available in two wire colours. This design was an exclusive for the Edinburgh Yarn Festival 2019.
Working from a grid pattern chart, you will see how easy it is to incorporate beads into your wire knitting. Your knitted piece will then be placed in a brooch frame, ready for you to wear or place on your favourite project bag!
Design ideas will also be explored, demonstrating how wire can be knitted and crocheted to produce interesting, wearable pieces.
Class attendees receive a 10% discount at Countess Ablaze for use on the day.
About Suraya Hossain:
Mahliqa’s designer and creator, Suraya, is a London-born British Asian, who draws on her cultural heritage of arts and handicrafts from the Indian Sub-continent.
Her collections explore the traditional art of stitch in jewellery, using wire to reflect the patterns of knit, stitch and crochet, incorporating those age-old crafts into her work.
Her love of nature is also a huge influence in her design process, which is reflected by her wire flowers, plants, references to the natural elements and colourful landscapes. In her exhibition "Where Wool Meets..." in 2017, she produced a full length wire skirt, depicting the fragility of the earth that we live on, demonstrating that we need to take care of what surrounds us.
Suraya is a regular exhibitor at The Knitting and Stitching Shows, where she exhibits her jewellery and wire jewellery knitting kits, and also demonstrates the art of knitting with wire. She has been featured in the We Make London publication “Inspired:London – A Guide to Handmade In London” published in 2012. Her wire designs have also been featured in "The Knitter".
