The Potter League is a sister shelter to NOWZAD, the only animal rescue organization in war torn Afghanistan. https://www.nowzad.com A fundraiser will be held on Thursday, April 18 at Cappy’s Hill Side Café on Memorial Ave. in Newport from 6-9 to begin raising transport costs. There will be a raffle, free pizza and all bar tips go to NOWZAD to transport Tope and Linus.Royal British Marine Pen Farthing founded NOWZAD in 2006, originally to reunite allied soldiers fighting in Afghanistan with the animals they had adopted while stationed there. Those animals, as Pen says, often provided the soldiers with a few minutes of tranquility and a sense of home during times otherwise filled with chaos and warfare. Since then, NOWZAD has reunited over 1200 cats and dogs with soldiers in the US, Canada, Germany and Britain. More recently, NOWZAD has begun dealing with the stray animal population in Afghanistan, a result of a Taliban ban against owning pets. The NOWZAD shelter, largely built from funds received consequent to Pen being named CNN’s 2014 Hero of the Year, is consistently filled to capacity, including many adoptable dogs and cats just needing homes. With New England shelters increasingly relying on transports for adoptable animals, NOWZAD’s supply could help meet New England’s demand. Linus and Tope will hopefully be the first of many more transports from NOWZAD.

Tope is a 3-year-old Pen found running on the runway at Kabul airport. He’s been raised at NOWZAD. Linus is an 8-year-old female who was the pet of an Afghan family who couldn’t keep her when they moved. Rather than just put her on the street, as often happens, they took her to NOWZAD.

More about NOWZAD can be found on the Discovery Channel program Battle Dogs, a 10 part series about the shelter, and on a segment of the Animal Planet series DoDo Heroes. https://www.animalplanet.com/tv-shows/dodo-heroes/full-episodes/pen-and-the-dogs-of-war
