My background is as a professional opera singer and a professional painter.
On Painting: I came to painting after training in conservatory and working as a professional tenor. Coming to painting after music has enabled me to think about painting methodically. Like music, representational painting has constraints of form: drawing, edges, color, shape, color, light and shadow. Like learning how to sing or play an instrument, I believe that handling these elements of painting can be learned efficiently in thirty minute or hour long private sessions.
For me, painting is a process of learning to see. You will decide what is significant and learn how to portray this significance. I am embarking on teaching lessons via Zoom or other apps because I feel that learning fundamental concepts of painting can be understood via remote learning.
I'm a member of, the Art Students League of New York, the Garrison Art Center, and the Salmagundi Club of New York.
On Voice: As professional tenor, I have performed with opera companies in the United States and Europe, having made my professional debut with the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis as Brighella in Ariadne auf Naxos. Most recently, I performed the tenor solo in the Beethoven 9th Symphony with the New Jersey Choral Society and the Orchestra Nexus under the direction of Eric Dale Knapp, conductor.Highlights from my previous work in opera include: Second King in Die Liebe der Danae with the Salzburg Festival (Salzburg, Austria); Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, Camille in The Merry Widow, and Kudrjasch in Katya Kabanova with the Luzerner Theater (Luzern, Switzerland); Pong in Turandot with Virginia Opera(Norfolk, VA), Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni with the Circulo Portuense de Opera (Porto, Portugal) and the Mississippi Opera (Jackson, MS); both Tom Rakewell in The Rake’s Progress,and Sam Polk in Floyd’s Susannah with the Wiener Kammeroper (Vienna, Austria).
In our remote learning sessions, we will learn how to simultaneously connect the voice with the body and achieve placement "in the mask"-- simultaneously, while perfecting legato. We will learn to achieve the "chiaroscuro" tone (dark/light) that makes for a captivating sound.
